„Million Dollar Charly” tells a part of the astonishing life story of the German boxer Charles Graf. The so-called “Cassius Clay of Waldhof” was the first and only black male to win the German heavyweight championship (1985) – after he had been in prison for over ten years. The movie switches between scenes from his time in prison and his previous life and shows how Charly Graf starts to get in touch with his actual personality thru his imprisonment. In this process his inmates Sonnenberg, Meyer and especially Peter-Jürgen Boock, who are all terrorist members of the RAF play a significant role. Faced with their political view which illustrates the German’s autumn of terror and dealing with an intellect Charly never has been exposed to before, strongly affect him and broaden his horizon. These entire experiences make it possible that he overcomes his obstacles and against all odds gains the significant victory – against his opponent in the ring and above all, against himself.
